Last night Brian said he wanted to build a little bonfire to roast hot dogs for dinner (and marshmallows too for Smores, of course). He had some wood scraps from a project at the apartments and found a good spot in some gravel for a fire pit. I used the opportunity take more pictures!
First job was to unload the wood from the back of the truck. Lots of willing helpers for that job!
Can you guess what McKay's job was to get out of the shop?
Brian gave McKay the job of starting the fire. He hasn't had many opportunities for building campfires. He has had a couple of "bad" experiences lighting matches for birthday candles, so he wasn't so sure about that part, but he did manage to get it lit (in the wind and everything).
There it goes!
The girls got to watch. :-)
Typical sisters -- can you guess what Courtney is on the verge of doing here?
(Yep, she was mad at Hayley for some reason or another and was in the process of hitting.)
After the fire died down, we roasted the hot dogs. The biggest challenge of the evening for me was dealing with the FLIES. I don't know where they came from, but they were everywhere. Normally flies don't really bother me (at least they aren't biting you like mosquitos), but when they are swarming everywhere you turn, it is just disgusting. We had brought out our little folding table to set food and stuff on, but the flies were covering it so much we couldn't even sit at it to eat. The girls went into the garage to eat because of the flies (although today the garage seems infested with flies now too). I spent a good part of yesterday evening and this morning killing flies in the house. Yuck!
Some of us did smores with our little fire, too. I am not a fan of smores so I didn't have any, and I think a couple of kids only ate plain marshmallows. Hayley apparently is not a big fan of anything roasted over a fire, because all she would eat for dinner was an empty hot dog bun and a few chips. :-)
So we've had our first hot dog roast! Next time I hope the flies aren't invited...

They do always show up when there's food, though! Very fun that you can bring a bit of camping to your home!
