Our Day at Breckenridge

One of the highlights everyone looked forward to during our trip to Colorado was a visit to Breckenridge and a ride (or two) down the Alpine SuperSlide. I remember doing this as a teenager and it was always a lot of fun (they have since added a third slide run to the mountain).

We met up with my sister Malinda and her family for the morning. McKay and his cousin Ethan were excited to try out the slide!

McKay went down the middle lane first, but for his second run, he tried out the new "expert" slide, which is different from the other two (only solo riders allowed, so none of the rest of us got to try that one).

The girls all had to ride with an adult (you have to be 7 to be a solo rider), so Brian took Hannah up first.

Courtney (who has a hard time not being first at anything these days) cried most of the time we waited for them to come back down.

But then she got to have a turn riding up with Dad...

...followed by Hayley's turn.

We had purchased a 2-ride pass for McKay (not nearly enough for his liking, but he had to live with it) and a 5-ride adult pass for us to split up among the girls. After Brian's 3 rides, I got to take Courtney up for another ride...

... and then Hannah for our last slide ride of the day. (The lines definitely got longer as the morning went on!)

We also purchased tickets to ride up in the "Colorado SuperChair" for a scenic view. The kids had fun on the long lift ride up the beautiful mountain.

At the top, we walked around for a minute (but not too far because the kids were all moaning and complaining about how tired they were!).

We went to one of the look-out points and took a few pictures.

We tried to take a family picture using the timer on our camera, but it turned out a little blurry...

I made the kids pose for a few more pictures before heading back down.

The ride down was lots of fun too!

Finally, before we left Breckenridge, McKay really wanted to try the "human maze" they had. So we bought tickets for him and Hannah to go in and Courtney went along (she was free). Brian and I went up to the viewpoint to watch.

The goal of the maze is to find four different letter punches (M-A-Z-E) for your punch card (which you punch in on a time clock when you go in). After you punch all four letters, you find your way back out and punch the time clock again. If you make it in under 8 minutes, you get some sort of prize. McKay & Hannah lost Courtney a few times, but they managed to find all four punches. However, they got stuck trying to find their way back out.

Hannah and Courtney had finally had enough and just crawled under the walls (there are big signs telling you not to do this, but we figured it was okay since they were over 8 minutes by that point anyway). McKay refused to cheat and insisted on finding his way out on his own. But he just kept coming back to the same point. From up above, Brian gave him the instructions to just follow along the right side of the maze and it would eventually get him out. So McKay put his hand out to touch the right wall and walked through the maze -- if he hit a dead end, the right wall would just walk him around through it -- if he came to an opening, he would turn there, etc. The strategy -- although probaby not the fastest -- did work and he made it out! His time was 26 minutes (as opposed to the girls who had 15 minutes on their cards). He was very proud of himself!
